Updates to useful content in Google Search generate signals used by our automated ranking system to better ensure that people see original, useful content written by people in search results. This page further explains how the update works, as well as actions you can take to assess and improve content.

How helpful content updates work

Useful content updates aim to better appreciate content that is satisfactory to its visitors, while content that does not meet visitor expectations will not perform well.

This update generates site-wide signals that we consider among many other signals for ranking web pages. Our systems automatically identify content that appears to be low-value, low-value, or otherwise of little help to searchers.

All content—not just unhelpful content—on certain sites that are considered to contain relatively high amounts of unhelpful information, is less likely to perform well on Search, assuming there is content on other web pages that is better to show. Therefore, removing unhelpful content can help improve the ranking of your other content.

This classifier process is fully automated and uses machine learning models. This process is neither a manual action nor a spam action. However, this process is just one of many signals that Google evaluates to rank content.

This means that some user-first content on classified sites that have unhelpful content can still rank well, if there are other signals identifying that user-first content is useful and relevant to a query. This signal also has a certain weight; If the site has a lot of unhelpful content, it will adversely affect the site’s ranking.

Currently, this update only involves searching in English globally. We plan to expand this feature to other languages in the future. We’ll also continue to improve the way the classifier detects content that doesn’t help, and we look forward to sharing any major changes on our Google Search ranking updates page.

Our classifiers will continue to run, so both newly launched and existing sites can be continuously monitored. Since it is determined that unhelpful content has not been displayed in the long run, the classification will no longer apply.
