A/B testing is a testing method used to compare two or more software variants directly in a live environment to determine which one performs best from the user’s perspective.

What is A/B Testing?

A/B testing, also known as online controlled experimentation or continuous experimentation, is a testing method used to compare two or more versions of a software product in a real-time environment to determine which performs better from the end-user’s perspective.

Common examples include websites and mobile apps. The two alternatives being compared are referred to as Variant A and Variant B. These usually share the same fundamental structure, but have certain differences—such as color, size, placement, or other UI elements—which may result in different user responses. This method is vital for data-driven decision-making.

A/B Testing Process

The A/B testing process typically consists of three main stages: design, execution, and evaluation.

1. Design Phase

This phase involves defining the parameters to be tested, such as the target population, the duration of the experiment, and the A/B metrics. Teams involved at this stage include UI/UX designers.

Key parameters to define include:

  • Hypothesis to be tested, for example: “The new button design will improve the user conversion rate.”

  • Target population, meaning the user segment to be divided into Groups A and B.

  • Duration of the experiment, which should be adjusted based on traffic volume and the time needed to achieve statistical significance.

  • A/B metrics, which are the performance indicators used to evaluate the success of the experiment, such as click-through rate (CTR), sign-up rate, time spent in the app, or purchase rate.

Example: In an e-commerce application, the design team creates two checkout page variants: Variant A with a blue button and Variant B with a green button. The experiment architect sets the conversion rate as the main success metric, with a one-week testing duration and a focus on new users accessing the app via mobile devices. This approach helps assess the impact of visual design on user behavior in a measurable way.

2. Execution Phase

This phase involves deploying both variants (A and B) into the live software system. The system automatically splits the user population into different segments. The development roles involved in this stage include Frontend Developers, Backend Developers, Data Engineers, DevOps Engineers, and QA Testers.

Example: A food delivery app company wants to test two designs of the restaurant menu page:

  • Variant A shows a list of dishes with large images and short descriptions.

  • Variant B shows a vertical list format with detailed info such as calories and preparation time.

3. Evaluation Phase

Once the experiment is completed, the hypothesis is evaluated using statistical methods, such as Student’s t-test or Welsh’s t-test, to determine if the differences between the variants are statistically significant.

Development team members involved at this stage include Data Analysts / Data Scientists, Product Managers, Backend Engineers, and QA Testers.

Example: In a food ordering app experiment, two versions of the “Order Now” button are tested:

  • Variant A uses a red button.

  • Variant B uses an orange button.

After one week, the team finds that Variant B achieves an 8% higher conversion rate than Variant A. To ensure the difference is statistically significant and not due to random variation, the team runs Welsh’s t-test.
