Activity diagrams are patterns used in modeling business processes. Apart from that, it is also applied to information systems to represent the sequence of activities or actions in a process.  

This diagram shows the activities in the process, the sequence of the activities, and the actions that occur in each activity.  

The existence of an activity diagram can show decisions or branches in a process.  

This diagram is often used to aid understanding and analysis. This model is also used to design or improve an information system.

The function of an Activity Diagram is 

The functions in the activity diagram are none other than part of the business process model. It shows how an activity is processed or executed.  

The diagram is also a useful visualization tool for identifying problems in business processes, reducing redundancy and increasing efficiency.  

The following are several functions in the activity diagram along with examples of their application. 

Shows the state of the system  

Through the example activity diagram created, the relationship between flows and their conditions will be easier to understand. 

In this case, the diagram shows how the process changes from one state to another.  

Understand special conditions  

Judging from the meaning of the activity diagram itself, it can show the scheme and special conditions in the system. 

The diagram will show how the process should be carried out when there are special conditions that affect the process.  

Increase efficiency  

There are various activity diagram symbols that are used to increase efficiency in business processes.  

Symbols are divided into several categories, namely:  

  • Start point: The starting point of the process 
  • End point: The end point of the job 
  • Activity: Process flow in ongoing business 
  • Decision: Indicates a choice or decision 
  • Fork: Explains that there is one main activity which will be followed by two or more other activities 
  • State transition: Used as a reference for moving state 
  • Swimlane: Grouping activities according to actors 

The characters in the diagram show how the same tasks can be executed simultaneously. Then how can unnecessary tasks be eliminated?  

The use of activity diagrams is very important to help understand tasks and business processes. So of course people outside the work system, for example stakeholders or investors, will be greatly helped.
