Webometrics is one of the world’s most recognized university ranking systems, evaluating higher education institutions based on their academic performance and digital presence.
The Webometrics Ranking of World Universities is published twice a year, in January and July, providing institutions with an up-to-date benchmark of their digital impact and research performance.
According to the latest January 2026 edition released through Figshare, more than 32,000 higher education institutions worldwide participated in the ranking, including both public and private universities in Indonesia.
The results demonstrate that Indonesian universities continue to strengthen their global competitiveness through research excellence, academic openness, and digital visibility.
What is Webometrics?
Webometrics was established by Isidro F. Aguillo and his team at the Cybermetrics Lab, a research group under the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC).
The year 2004 marked the inception of the Webometrics Ranking, which was developed in response to the changing paradigm of the academic world in the early 21st century.
The Webometrics ranking system focuses on analyzing and evaluating the performance of higher education institutions through web-based indicators. Its primary objective is to promote open access to information, academic transparency, and the continuous improvement of research quality on a global scale.
From 2004 to 2025, Isidro F. Aguillo used Webometrics.info as the official platform for publishing and distributing Webometrics ranking results. Through this platform, all participating universities were able to openly access their ranking positions and performance results under the principles of Open Access.
However, beginning in January 2025, Isidro F. Aguillo announced a change in the distribution system for Webometrics ranking results through his official account on the X platform. As a result, the official publication platform was migrated to Figshare.
In the January and July 2025 editions, all participating institutions were still able to access their global and national ranking positions publicly. However, access to detailed indicator scores remained limited.
Starting with the January 2026 edition, access to Webometrics ranking results became more restricted under a Limited Access policy. Only the top-ranked institution in each country can publicly access its detailed ranking results. Institutions that are not ranked first in their respective countries may obtain their ranking data and detailed performance indicators through an official purchase process directly authorized by Isidro F. Aguillo.
Webometrics Evaluation Methodology
Starting from the January 2025 edition, Webometrics evaluates universities using three primary indicators:
| Visibility | Number of external inlinks from different networks (subnets) to the main university domain (January 2026). | Majestic | 50% |
| Openness | Number of top 10% cited papers for each of the 27 academic disciplines during the period 2020–2024. | Scimago | 40% |
| Excellence | Number of citations during the period 2021–2025 for institutions with a Research Organization Registry (RoR) identifier. | OpenAlex | 10% |
